Diagnostic approach to transitory pediatric hypersomnolence. Case report

Abstract Introduction: Hypersomnolence is a common complaint from parents, caregivers, and patients themselves in pediatric clinical consultations, but it often underestimated by clinicians. This article aims to review the diagnostic approach hypersomnolence highlight gap between knowledge practice regarding sleep disorders. Case presentation: An 8-year-old boy presented with an episode of excessive sleepiness that prevented him attending school carrying out his daily activities. Anamnesis family personal history did not account for symptoms, physical mental examinations showed no significant findings. Evaluation specialists results paraclinical studies performed also yield findings identify cause these symptoms. Finally, immunological tests positive levels herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) Epstein-Barr (EBV), suggesting resolved viral infection was most likely transitory hypersomnolence. Conclusions: Clinicians should be equipped tools necessary properly assess diagnose children adolescents, as symptom potentially serious repercussions on their environment.
